Back in 2015 Peterborough City Council recycled 45.4% of its waste, landfilled 52.4%, and incinerated 2.1%.
By 2023 incineration had increased by 55 percentage points to 57.1%.
Recycling decreased over the same period by 3.6 percentage points to 41.8%. In 2023 0.3% of waste was landfilled.
There are currently 19 years left on a contract with Viridor. The total contract value is £250m. The contract has a clawback arrangement: “Yes, Peterborough City Council receives all the income from the electricity generated.”
