Back in 2015 Monmouthshire recycled 63.2% of its waste, landfilled 18.1%, and incinerated 17%.
By 2023 incineration had increased by 12.4 percentage points to 29.4%.
Recycling increased over the same period by 6.8 percentage points to 70%. In 2023 0.2% of waste was landfilled.
There are currently 17 years left on a contract with Viridor. The total contract value is £157m. The contract has a clawback arrangement: “The contract contains gain share arrangements between the council and the contractor but the details of the agreements are exempt under Section 43(2)Prejudice to Commercial Interests.”
