Recycling has increased 13.1 percentage points in the waste authority for Newport

Back in 2015 Newport recycled 52% of its waste, landfilled 36.7%, and incinerated 11.1%.

By 2023 incineration had increased by 21.4 percentage points to 32.5%.

Recycling increased over the same period by 13.1 percentage points to 65.2%. In 2023 1.4% of waste was landfilled.

There are currently 17 years left on a contract with Viridor. The total contract value is £68m. The contract has a clawback arrangement: “The contract contains gain share arrangements between the council and the contractor but the details of the agreements are exempt under Section 43(2)Prejudice to Commercial Interests.”
